Material studies at the highest pressures
POSTER
Abstract
Using high-power lasers and convergent geometries, we can drive materials to pressures higher than 10 TPa – a regime where we may begin to test models for electronic excitation and ionization - and measure the pressure and compressibility. We will summarize experimental platforms developed at the National Ignition facility for benchmarking Hugoniot equation of state at ultra-high pressures in the plasma phase, and report new data on gold, diamond and water.
