Optical Response and Hugoniot State of Shock-Compressed Perfluorooctane

ORAL

Abstract

The shock response of Perfluorooctane (PFO) liquid was tested in a gas gun to determine index of refraction and Hugoniot equation of state data. PFO was confined in a cell with a fused-silica window and subjected to one-dimensional compression from a copper impactor and driver at pressures between 1 to 12 GPa. Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) was used to measure shock and particle velocity through the liquid cell. The resulting data was used to support tamped Richtmyer–Meshkov Instability (RMI) experiments in which PFO was used as a tamper, by correcting PDV data and calibrating material models. The same technique was also otherwise used to evaluate shock properties of deuterium oxide (D2O) solutions of sodium polytungstate (SPT) and lithium heteropolytungstate (LST), which are adjustable density solutions up to approximately 3 g/cm3 and can potentially be impedance-matched window materials for equation of state experiments.
