Rod Impacts of an Insensitive High Explosive
ORAL
Abstract
IMX-104, an insensitive high explosive (HE) formulation consisting of 2,4-Dinitroanisole (DNAN), 3-Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), and 1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX), was tested in a series of rod impact experiments. Flat-nosed steel rods impacted HE targets of different thicknesses at ~100 m/s. In some tests, the HE target was backed by a confining poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) window. High-speed video and off-axis photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV) provided measurements of the damage and flow fields, as well as indicators of ignition.
