Rigorous temperature analysis for colored and Fe-bearing minerals

ORAL

Abstract

Colored and iron (Fe)-bearing minerals pose a unique challenge to taking temperature measurements in shock experiments. The uneven absorption across the visible spectrum and added reflectivity from Fe require additional corrections and considerations. We correct for wavelength-dependent absorption and then use a Monte Carlo calculation to fit a multi-wavelength solution for Sandia Z machine Streaked Visible Spectroscopy (SVS) measurements on Fe-free and Fe-bearing enstatite ((Mg,Fe)SiO3) and on pyrolite (~(Mg,Fe)2SiO4 + (Mg,Fe)SiO3). These results are compared to temperature measurements on the OMEGA-EP Streaked Optical Pyrometry (SOP) system to determine how well results from these facilities correlate considering their different specializations. We observed good temperature agreement between Z and OMEGA within error.
