Structure Formation in Thin Cellulose Films

Abstract
Structure formation in thin cellulose films has been studied. Starting from molecular solutions of cellulose, full amorphization of cellulose films is achieved through sequential removal of solvents, successive diffusion of ionic liquid molecules out of cellulose films, and simultaneous formation of hydrogen bonding among cellulose chains. Amorphous cellulose films further transform to cellulose II upon exposure to water vapor, and cellulose IVII in the dimethyl sulfoxide vapor. Reversibility of vapor-induced crystalline polymorphs is demonstrated. Data show the important role of local heterogeneity, metastability and relaxation in structure forming.
