Mechanical Metamaterials You Can Count On

ORAL

Abstract

Most mechanical metamaterials perform a single-step function, such as shape-morphing under pressure. However, nonlinearities in mechanical building blocks - buckling, snapping, self-contacts - open a route towards multi-step metamaterials, crucial for storing and processing information. Here we present a class of structures whose state depends on a sequence of identical input cycli: these metamaterials count.
