Folding of Metamaterials: the Role of Pathways

Abstract
We show how hierarchically shaped elastic materials fold and buckle in a sequence of steps when submitted to compression. We highlight how the materials design controls the critical strain of each folding step, and leverage this to manipulate the folding pathway.
