Magnetic domain formation in field-cooled metals

Abstract

We explore the effect of field-cooling on the formation of magnetic domains in films of the magnetic metals Ni and Fe using magnetic force microscopy. In particular, we study the dependence of the domain pattern on both film thickness and external magnetic field strength and compare the results to the domain structures of zero-field cooled specimens.
