Experimental study of the dynamics of crumpling

Abstract

We experimentally measure the temporal evolution of crumpled configurations of thin elastic sheets. In our experiment, elastic hydrogel sheets swell inside a hard spherical shell, free of gravitational and plastic effects. We observe the dynamic evolution of structures in the sheet as confinement ratio increases, and analyze the statistical nature of the elastic energy localization around singularities.
