The Upgrade of the Advanced Light Source (ALS-U)
ORAL
Abstract
The Advanced Light Source is a soft x-ray synchrotron providing light for users worldwide, and it will undergo a major upgrade to make the light fully coherent and increase the brightness hundredfold. I will provide an overview of the project and the development of new technologies to preserve the coherence of the beam, such as cryocooled mirrors, x-ray wavefront sensors and x-ray deformable mirrors. After completion, scientists will be able to invent new image techniques based on coherence and leverage complex light-matter interactions to perform fast, high-resolution measurements with x-ray and probe matter in its most intricate details.
*The Advanced Light Source is supported by the Director, Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, of the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract No. DE-AC02-05CH11231.
