Nuclear structure of 50Sc: New transition Strengths and Lifetimes.

ORAL

Abstract

Nuclei with few valence particles outside of a doubly magic core provide valuable information about single-particle energies, nucleon-nucleon effective interactions and may give insight into the onset of collectivity. The 50Sc (Z=21, N=29) nucleus with just one proton and one neutron outside of the doubly magic 48Ca constitutea an excellent testing ground for the study of these phenomena.

One of the best means to study the atomic nucleus is through lifetime measurements of excited states since they allow direct and model-independent access to electromagnetic transition probabilities, which are key quantities for the study of single-particle configurations and nuclear collectivity. They provide stringent tests of theoretical models. This work using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC studies the nuclear structure of 50Sc through the lifetime measurements of its excited states and compares with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations.
