Title: Non-perturbative analysis of superfluid flow in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Poster

Abstract

Studying superfluid flow in Bose-Einstein condensates provides a clean platform for studying turbulence and quantum analogs of classical fluid dynamics. Previous experimental work from our collaboration has characterized phenomena such as turbulent drag and rarefied flow in ultracold atomic systems, typically using macroscopic features to quantify flow speeds in non-trivial backgrounds. In this work, we present a new analysis method for characterizing flow in a Bose-Einstein condensate that directly extracts flow speed in the system. This approach enables a more spatially continuous analysis that does not require additional perturbations of the superfluid to make measurements. To test this new method, we present a comparison of the results from this analysis to previously characterized rarefaction flow. By verifying this analysis method, we aim to improve quantitative methods to understand non-trivial superfluid flow.
