Narrow-line magneto-optical trap of titanium atoms

Oral

Abstract

Ultracold titanium possesses favourable properties for optical metrology and studies of spin-orbit coupling. Here, we present a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of titanium on a narrow transition (Γ/2𝜋 = 11.3 kHz). This second-stage, narrow-line MOT reduces the temperature of atoms by more than an order of magnitude compared to the initial broad-line MOT, cooling atoms to <2 μK. We report the lifetime, constrain two-body losses and branching ratio, and show the spontaneous spin-polarization of atoms in the narrow-line MOT. Finally, we discuss next steps towards achieving a quantum degenerate gas of titanium atoms.

Publication: We are currently preparing a paper detailing the Ti narrow-line MOT.
